NEW ZEALAND CYCLING ROUTE MAPS
Below are maps of routes that I have cycled in New Zealand; this was at the South Island. These are routes we took when we cycled along the Central Otago Rail Trail. We did cycle at Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki, Queenstown and Christchurch, unfortunately I did not track those rides (... to view those rides click here to see Cycling New Zealand 2014). And also another tour in 2018 starting from Auckland.
Click on relevant screen zoom rectangle (at the top right hand corner of each map) to go to the respective route map:
Arrowtown to Queenstown New Zealand Cycling Route Map (20.67km)
Cycle Route:Sherwood Queenstown>by ORbus>Arrowtown>Arrowtown Chinese Settlement>Lake Hayes>Shotover>Frankton>Lake Wakatipu>Sherwood Queenstown.
The route starts with a short steep climb at Arrowtown and then goes along the fairly flat Arrowtown-Lake Hayes Road. At Lake Hayes is a stretch on off-track trials on the Lake Hayes Circuit which are undulating with some steep sections. It then continues on cycling lanes along the Frankton-Ladies Mile Highway; at the busy bridge spanning over the Shotover River, there are now cycling lanes. It ends with roads along the residential area at Frankton before going onto the Lake Wakatipu Trail.

Route: Sherwood_Queenstown>by_Jetstar>Auckland>drive>Huntly>drive>Hamilton>drive>Hobbiton>drive>Blue Spring> drive> Hamilton.
This map is a road trip and not a non-cycling map, although it is possible to cycle from Auckland to Hamilton and then onwards to Hobbiton and the Blue Spring. It just needs more time, an item which we were short of..

Central Otago Rail Trail - Clyde to Omakau New Zealand Cycling Route Map
Route: Bus Ride: Queenstown>Clyde;
From Queenstown we boarded an Intercity bus to head on a 85 km. trip to Clyde. We did a bit of cycling around Clyde town and then rode on the 150th Anniversary Clyde to Alexandra Trail. Over at Alexandra we rode around looking for a winery to sample some wine.
It is at Alexandra that we really started our trek along the Otago Central Rail Trail, kicking of at a point from a place curiously called Chicago Street. This first day trail ride of 29 km. ended at Omakau. These cycling trails are on the route of a former railway line and are un-tarred; they are instead covered with large gravels. They are several bridges (mostly wooden) and tunnels to cross.

Central Otago Rail Trail - Omakau to Wedderburn New Zealand Cycling Route Map
The route is from Omakau (Oh! My Cow) to Wedderburn (Weather Burn); please pardon us for the play on the places' names, it helped us remember the places more easily.
These cycling trails are on the route of a former railway line and are un-tarred; they are instead covered with large gravels. They are several bridges (mostly wooden) and tunnels to cross.

The final day of our Otago Central Rail Trail ride was a 42km. route, one that was fairly flat and quite straight taking us pass a few towns and also a memorial.

Queenstown To Milford Sound Route Map
Travel Route:Sherwood Queenstown>Garston>Te Anau>Te Anau Downs>Mirror Lakes>Homer Tunnel>Milford Sound>Sherwood Queenstown.
This is not a cycling route but a bus tour route starting and ending at Queenstown. Along the way we pass by several small towns to reach Te Anau. It it from Te Anau that things get more interesting as we travel along the scenic Milford Road and made several picturesque stops. The long 280km. bus trip was rewarded by a beautiful cruise along Milford Sound.

Queenstown Airport To Queenstown New Zealand Cycling Route Map (4.86 km.)
Cycling Route: Auckland>by Jetstar>Queenstown Airport>Boat Shed Cafe>Sherwood.
The route is fairly flat near the airport and along the Lake Wakatipu Trail. Do note that there are not many road/trail that links this trail to Frankton Road; and the exit used was near the Boat Shed Cafe to get to the road which has shared cycling paths. On Frankton Road, the route is undulating with a couple of steep stretches.

Queenstown Lake Wakatipu Trail New Zealand Cycling Route Map (15.4 km.)
Cycling Route: Queenstown Lake Esplanade>Queenstown Garden>Jubilee Park>Club Pacific Beach>Kawarau Falls Dam>Kelvin Peninsula>Boat Shed Cafe>Sherwood Queenstown.
This route runs a loop along Lake Wakatipu Trail. From the Queenstown Lake Esplanade to the Kawarau Falls Dam it is fairly flat with some gentle undulating sections. There is a steep climb up and down to the Kawarau Falls Dam bridge. Over at the Kelvin Peninsula, the route has steeper undulating sections. This is a beautiful trail that runs along the lakeside which has very clear water, it goes through woodlands amidst colourful flora. The scenery is a superb one of a blue lake fringed by green/brown mountains which are snow-capped, depending on the season. It's best to take one's time and appreciate the beauty of the place.
